Is Darwinism Making Students Un-American?

Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, and as may be expected, evolutionists, atheists, and secularists around the world celebrate his birthday annually. In 1859, Darwin published his famous work, The Origin of Species,[1] which thrust him on to the world stage. As a result of the influence of Darwin’s philosophy, nearly 100 million individuals lost their lives at the hands of the totalitarian regimes that Darwinism spawned.[2] Despite the malignant influence, Darwinian philosophy remains a primary mode of operation and investigation in American schools. As the twenty-first century begins, Americans appear unaware of the incompatibility of Darwinism with the legal foundation bequeathed to America by her Founding Fathers.

While secularist, atheists, agnostics, and other irreligionists adamantly deny America’s religious foundation and celebrate the triumph of Darwinism, nothing is as frustrating to them as the historical and literary facts that surround the founding of America. While the Constitution (1789) embodies the essential legal formula of the nation, the Declaration of Independence (1776) presents the religious motivating principles of America’s Founding Fathers for asserting independence from the British crown. In the first two paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence, the Signers of this important document identify the religious legitimacy for both separation and formation of their new nation. As noticed in these two paragraphs, the Signers argued that the legitimacy for the two acts of separation and formation rested upon, what they believed, was divine sanction:

When in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation.

We hold these truths to be self––evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness––That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it . . .

Two convictions of America’s Founding Fathers emerge from these paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence that are irreconcilable with Darwinism.

The Signers Affirmed a Creator

The Signers of the Declaration of Independence possessed a conviction that America’s life possessed divine sanction. Because the Signers regarded God the “Creator” as the Origin of all life, they also believed that He was the Origin of America’s national life. The two expressions that are used in these two paragraphs to refer to God––”Nature’s God” and “Creator”––are used to suggest God initiated natural or physical life and also initiated the new beginning of America’s life. This belief is a complete rejection of the secular beliefs that gave rise to the French Revolution, and appealed to divine authority for separating from England. The Signers believed they were authorized to “dissolve the Political Bands which . . . connected them with another” and “assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station” that other nations of the world enjoyed among one another. Unlike the French Revolution that depended upon the humanistic “rights of man,” the Signers of the Declaration insisted that the creation of America was the choice of “Nature’s God”:

When in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them . . .

The Signers clearly believed that the authority for and legitimacy of national existence rested upon “Nature’s God,” not the secularist’s “rights of man” or Darwinian survival of the fittest. Without a conviction, that government is from God, politics degenerates into a tyrannical or transitory state.

The Signers Affirmed a Sustainer

In addition to believing that God created the world and sanctioned the life of a new nation, the Signers believed God was the Sustainer of what He had made. They believed Nature’s God sustained his creation with the “Laws of Nature” and those laws were fundamental to the moral laws that formed good human government. In the second paragraph, the Signers developed their thought to show that God the “Creator” bestowed the gifts of “unalienable rights” upon individuals when they are “created” and “that to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men.” They further believed human government had the responsibility, under God, of ensuring that just law was maintained as a guardian of the gifts of “unalienable rights.” Clearly, they understood that all human government was to recognize and implement the will of God, and no sphere of existence had a right to throw off the laws of the “Creator” or “Nature’s God.” Their classical educations (in addition to Scripture) taught them that if God created the natural world to function well when appropriate laws were observed (“Laws of Nature”), it was also reasonable and expected that God governed the moral world of humanity with His moral laws.

Because the Founding Fathers believed God both made the world and governed or sustained what He made with his laws, they were far from being Deists, as secularists would have present-day Americans believe.

Darwinism Is Stealing Our Heritage

Two questions naturally arise as a result of the consideration of these historical facts:

First, if the Signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Founding Fathers established America’s national existence upon the work of the Creator, why are our schools forbidden to teach that upon which our Founding Fathers established our nation?

Second, since the Signers affirmed that nature was ruled by “Nature’s God,” why may our students not learn about the manner in which “Nature’s God” sustains what He has created?

Because of the acceptance of Darwinism in American schools, our students are now denied the right to study the principles upon which the Founding Fathers based America’s national existence and the laws that governed her life. Creationism, as believed by the Signers, is denied to our students. In its place rests the philosophy of Darwin, father of the genocides of the twentieth century. Any individual, movement, or form of thought that would deny or suppress what our Founding Fathers so clearly articulated is subversive to America. Americans have a right to ask, why are judges permitted to remain on the bench who rob future generations of Americans of the foundation of their national heritage? Why have our governors allowed this national betrayal? -this is treason?

Our children and youth have a right to study what our Founding Fathers advocated––they have a right to study about God the Creator and God the Sustainer! If the government grants liberty, the government may take liberty from its people. America’s Founding Fathers believed that America’s liberties were as sure as the “Creator” who granted them. When Darwinism denies God, it denies Americans their historic source of liberty!

Darwinism is incompatible with American patriotism!
